Feng and his wife had been living in this extremely remote village in the mountains in Henan province, China, for almost seven decades. They are now 89 and 86 years old, respectively.
As can be seen from the photo, the couple live a very simple life, with minimum material demands. What amazes me is that they have never been out of the village ever since their marriage 70 years ago.
According to Feng, they’ve had 4 children in a five year period back in the old days. Two died at birth because of poor health conditions of her wife, one was given to another family because at that time they don’t have enough food to feed her. And the forth one, their youngest son, died at the age of 13 of illness. It was then when they decided to spend the rest of their lives in this remote mountain village.
A typical day starts at 5AM. They get up and cook for breakfirst. Boiling some water for drinking for the day, doing some laundry, and some farming for vegetables and food.
Packaged food is rarely found here. We brought some milk for them. Mr Feng refused to drink them, “not used to the smell”, he said. Mrs Feng drank it, “I don’t want to waste it”, she said.
